Ringelz on terry cloth: a colour concept that goes with everything 🌈

Organic stretch terry cloth Ringelz by Jinny & Joe with matching cuff fabrics in several colour combinations

Ringelz are as much a part of Jinny & Joe as the colourful prints. For years you have been sewing them on jersey, and now they are also coming on organic stretch terry cloth: the same knitted stripes, but on a fabric with a surface all of its own. Five new colour combinations have joined, and like all our Ringelz they follow a concept that makes the decision easy for you. 🌈

A colour concept instead of chance

Our Ringelz are not one-offs, they are a modular system. Every colour combination is designed to go with the other Ringelz, with our print fabrics and with our cuff fabrics. So you can mix stripes with stripes, stripes with prints or stripes with solids without anything clashing. By now we have a whole range of such combinations in the line-up, and this round adds five new ones on terry cloth.

Perfect Match: cuffs tone on tone or as a contrast

To go with the Ringelz there are our heavy organic rib jersey cuff fabrics in matching colours. You can choose the cuff tone on tone, so it picks up one colour from the stripes. Or you deliberately set a contrast, and that is often what looks best on finished pieces. The photos show both: sweaters and hoodies where cuff and stripes blend into one colour, and ones where the cuff sets the accent. You will find all cuff fabrics under ribbed cuff fabrics.

The fabric: terry cloth with a surface of tiny loops

Close-up of the loop surface of organic stretch terry cloth Ringelz

Terry cloth is neither sweat nor jersey. Its surface is made up of many tiny loops that give the fabric its special structure: grippy, absorbent and with a feel you recognise straight away. The stripes are yarn-dyed: the yarn is dyed before knitting, so the stripes are created in the fabric itself and stay crisp even after many washes. Each stripe is about 2 cm high.

The fabric is made of 90 % organic cotton and 10 % recycled polyester, weighs around 300 g/mÂČ and is about 160 cm wide. Thanks to the stretch content it is elastic and can be sewn like a knit fabric. The Ringelz are designed by us and produced for us in small quantities, so you are not sewing something you can find on every corner. You will find more terry cloth among our terry cloth fabrics.

The matching cuff fabric is a heavy organic rib jersey made of 95 % organic cotton and 5 % elastane, around 420 g/mÂČ, as tubular fabric with a circumference of about 110 cm.

Did you know? Where terry cloth gets its German name

The German word Frottee sounds French but is a German coinage from frottieren, to rub, and that really does come from the French frotter. Terry fabric was originally made for exactly that, for rubbing yourself dry after a bath, which is why it still has its absorbent loop surface today. One distinction matters though: there is woven terry cloth. That is used for towels, for example, and is thicker and hardly stretchy at all. Our terry cloth is knitted (knit terry), elastic and made for sewing clothes.

One of a kind: woven labels make it yours

Jinny & Joe woven label sewn into a sweater made of terry cloth Ringelz

Ringelz, cuffs and a few seams turn into pieces that exist only once. If you want to underline that, sew in a woven label: at the hem, in the side seam or as a little flag on the cuff. Our woven labels match the colours of the range and turn your handmade piece into a true one-off.

What you can sew from it

Hoodies, sweaters, pyjamas, joggers, kids' clothes, beach ponchos. And because the colours are coordinated, you can combine leftovers from several Ringelz in one piece, for example front and sleeves in two different combinations. You will find more stripes and clear patterns in the Geometric & Stripes collection.

How to care for terry cloth and rib jersey

Both fabrics are machine washable. Wash them once before cutting, because cotton shrinks a little in the first wash, and turn the terry cloth inside out to protect the loops. For sewing, use a jersey or stretch needle and an elastic stitch; an overlocker is quickest because it finishes the edges at the same time. As with all natural fibres, small irregularities in the structure can occur, that is the character of the fabric.
